Kayapınar Urban Square

Kayapınar Urban Square

Project Description
A Front Facade for Diyarbakır: Kayapınar Hol

A new facade is suggested for Diyarbakır by designing an urban square in the northwestern part of the city center accommodating multi-functional areas in a high quality spatial scheme. Diyarbakır Kayapınar Urban Square, located on the Selahattin Eyyübi Boulevard, occupies an area of 62.572 m2. The Urban Square is configured as a space speaking to users from across age and social groups. Its eastern end abutting the boulevard is defined by “Melting Steps”. These steps turn into sitting steps in certain places, then decrease in height and become level with the ground and repeat this pattern many times to orient water plays and the amphitheater. The southern end of the Urban Square is shaped around an artificial and triangular green hill.

The areas around the Urban Square are connected via a curvilinear walking route. In the middle of this walking route is a steel arcade frame that intersect with the route at places and turns into pergolas. The arcade system is used in conjunction with planting design to enable strolling through the park in the harsh climatic conditions. The playground with its many fun activities for children, shallow pools, cat and dog parks, book café, sports-exercise grounds and running tracks turn the Square into a public space, in which everyone can find something for themselves.
